A Letter To My Blog, On Our One-Year Blogiversary

Dearest Blog,

It’s hard to believe that we’ve been together one whole year. We’ve come a long way since I got up the nerve to first introduce myself, having no idea what I was doing or what our future would hold.

You’ve been so patient as I’ve fumbled through this first year. You’ve stood by me as I’ve at times bared my soul (undoubtedly fueled by a combination of estrogen and caffeine) and other times hardly known what to say.

If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have met Jody, who only lives a couple miles away. I wouldn’t know Melody, another mom of three boys less than an hour away, or Sarah, my long-lost sister on the East Coast. I wouldn’t be trying to bribe Wendy to come to Des Moines so I can finally meet her in person. (What do you say, Iowa Mom? There may or may not be a barely smushed Butterfinger in it for you. Fresh from the bottom of my purse!)

I mean, I really don’t think I deserve you. C’mon, you even took me on a trip in February! It’s all because of you that I now have a friend to visit in San Francisco (Yeah, that means you, Andi.), and don’t think I’m not going to take advantage of that!

You know about my past—and oddly, you seem to almost enjoy my stories of rabid cats, County Fair disappointments, and ouija board confessions.

And when I got a little bit obsessed with a certain gypsy, well, you were the picture of patience (and, dare I say it, even a bit enabling). You seem to even understand the wily charms of barefooted guitar playing and hula hooping. (Not to mention pigeons and Tina Fey.)

I know I’ve neglected you at times. I’ve ignored you for days on end, and I haven’t always been real concerned about your appearance. I’m glad you haven’t taken it personally. This is just all new for me.

But now that we’ve reached this milestone, I’d like to take the opportunity to renew my commitment to you. I vow to pay more attention and spend more quality time with you—for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer. (Although it would be nice if you could figure out a way for me to make a bit of money off of you. I’m just saying…)

And I’ve got a little surprise for you too. Guess what? We’re going to be adding to our bloggy family! I can’t give you all the details yet, but I think you’re really going to love it. And don’t worry—I’m still going to have plenty of time for you!

So, thanks for a year rich with laughter and tears, nut cups and knife games, blasphemy and belly burns, road trips and wood ticks.

Now—Year Two. Bring it on.
