Not-So-Wordless Wednesday

Okay, this probably needs a bit of explanation.

I came across a handful of photos this year that I had never seen before, and I was fascinated. They were of my mom in college and as a young woman before she married my dad. It was amazing to see her in a completely different role in her life. She was silly; she was (I daresay) a tad bit wild—for her, anyway! She was so free! AND she was very, very pretty, which caught me a bit off-guard because she has always described herself as “an ugly duckling” growing up. (Hmm… maybe being hard on ourselves runs in the family…) Even though I too have passed this phase of my life, I found myself really identifying with her in a way I never had before. I wanted to go back in time and meet this young woman, talk to her about her hopes and dreams. I wanted to tell her what an amazing mother and human being she was going to turn out to be. I wanted to be her friend.

It made me so grateful that I have the opportunity to be her friend (and daughter) today.

  1. It’s always nice to be friends with your mom! I hope my children will think of me as their friend when they are adults, too. Nice post!

  2. That is a great picture. I love when I find pictures of my parents growing up, it always makes me think of them in a new light.

  3. Great post. Last night my dad made us dinner and dug out old photos. It’s interesting to “go back” with them.

  4. If you look at the date on the side of the photo, I think Mom and Dad WERE married then. Newlyweds, mind you, but still married. I think after I’d been married a month I was already like, “Put that damn camera away.”
Look at what a cute outfit she has on too! Mom has been selling herself short!

  5. the thing about your mom, beside her beauty, intelligence, and wit is her kindness. i remember as a kid always knowing she would have something nice to say to me every time i saw her. and she’s still that way! even at the grocery store! you are very blessed.
